White and gray everything has been the dominating color scheme over the past several years, and honestly, we’re exhausted of it. We get it; it’s easy to style with accents and it looks clean, but at this point it’s uninviting, overdone, and sterile. Not to mention, an all-white kitchen is a terrifying place to cook! We spoke to Chester County-based expert stager and interior designer, Lisa Palmer, about what other design trends and aesthetics we’re leaving in 2022 and those that we’re welcoming in 2023.
Fortunately, interior design doesn’t go through seasonal changes the same way that clothing does. It has, however, become abundantly clear that a few fan-favorite home décor trends from the last few years have overstayed their welcome. Lisa explains that the monochromatic kitchen is now outdated as designers are bringing in color, texture, and bold patterns. White will always have a place in design, but we’re complementing it with warmer, contrasting hues.
Another popular aesthetic we’ve seen in recent years is the modern farmhouse. It’s cozy, it’s rustic, it’s charming, but it’s been done and we’ve seen enough shiplap. It has over-saturated the market and we’re ready to see it go.
Fast furniture is easy, trendy, and budget-friendly, but it usually barely lasts the length of the trend it aligns with. We’re creating more waste by buying cheap furniture that falls apart after a handful of years. Lisa says it best: These pieces are great for replicating popular trends on a budget, but their lack of quality will become apparent quickly. Ultimately, they end up being kicked to the curb instead of being reused, recycle, and revamped. Environmentally friendly and sustainable is always in!
So what are we loving!?

IN:
NEUTRALS AND WARM EARTH TONES

OUT:
CLEAN WHITES AND LIGHT GREYS
WHY:
They’re calming and soothing, and they create a space that’s more comfortable and intimate. These welcoming hues are a soft way to achieve color and warmth in your home after being dominated by an all-gray-and-white period.

SUSTAINABLE, WELL-MADE FURNITURE AND ACCENTS

OUT:
FLIMSY FAST FURNITURE
WHY:
We love the environment, and wise investments. We care greatly about our carbon footprint, and designers, like Lisa Palmer, are leading us towards better choices and better investments in our homes.
The crisp, clean lines of recent years are being replaced by more shapes, curves, color, patterns, and texture, echoing a resurgence of 70s glam and Mid-Century Modern, and we are so here for it. Keeping up-to-date on the everchanging design styles seems intimidating, but ultimately it adds so many benefits to being a homeowner, especially in a hot real estate market. The more updated and modern your home and its finishes are, the more attractive it is to buyers. So, if you’re thinking of updating your home or staging it to sell, we are happy to talk design and décor and lead you in the right direction to maximize your profits.
